Elections Ontario is committed to reducing barriers to voting for Two-Spirit, transgender and gender diverse electors. We are dedicated to ensuring all electors can register and cast their ballots with ease.

Photo ID is not required to register or vote. We accept many forms of ID.

If you do provide photo ID, your appearance does not need to match the photo. Staff are trained to review IDs to confirm an elector's name and address. Your information will only be used to support the voting process.

You do not need to provide any information about your sex or gender expression when you go to vote.

You will need an accepted form of ID that confirms your single name. Elections Ontario accepts many forms of ID.

To register a mononym:

Use Voter Registration and select 'Add'.
When prompted to enter your name, enter your mononym into the box labelled 'Last name'.
Leave the boxes for 'First name' and 'Middle name' blank.
Complete the rest of the registration process as normal. You will need to provide your date of birth, address, and an accepted ID.

The provincial voters list uses information from multiple government sources. After you legally change your name, it may take some time before that change shows up in all government systems. Older records may still appear in government databases for some time, which can result in duplicate records under both your previous and current name.

Here’s what you can do to help ensure your information is accurate:

Check your information using Voter Registration under your current name and any previous names.
If you appear only under your previous name, submit a name change request.
If you use a single name, enter your mononym in the box labelled ‘Last Name’ when you submit the request. Leave the boxes labelled ‘First Name’ and ‘Middle Name’ blank.
You will need to provide proof of your name change and ID showing your name and address.
We accept many forms of ID. Photo ID is not required to update your name.
If you appear under both names, submit a request to remove the outdated record.
