ID Requirements
ID is required to vote or to update, add or remove your voter information from the voters list, the Register of Absentee Voters or the Register of Future Voters using eRegistration or a voter registration form.
To notify Elections Ontario of a death, you will need to provide a copy of documentation showing proof of death.
Photo ID is not required. If you choose to provide photo ID, your appearance does not need to match the photo. You do not need to provide any information about your sex or gender expression when you go to vote.
ID can be shown on a mobile device. International ID or permanent resident cards are not accepted.
We maintain a list of eligible voters in Ontario called the Permanent Register of Electors for Ontario, more commonly known as the voters list.
To update, add or remove your information from the voters list, you must provide one piece of ID showing both your:
- name; AND
- current residential address.

- Letter of confirmation of residence from a First Nation band or reserve or an Inuit local authority

- Loan statement or agreement
- Residential lease or mortgage agreement

Individuals who are temporarily residing outside of Ontario may be eligible to register as an absentee voter.
To add, update or remove your information on the Register of Absentee Voters, you must provide one piece of ID showing both your:
- name; AND
- current or last residential address in Ontario.

You will also need to provide proof of occupation or educational attendance if you are applying to be an absentee elector as one of the following:
- an active duty member in the service of the armed forces of Canada;
- an employee in the service of the Government of Ontario;
- an employee in the service of the Government of Canada and absent from Canada;
- person attending an educational institution; or
- as a family member of one of the above.

The Ontario Register of Future Voters is a list of eligible 16- and 17-year-olds who will be automatically added to the voters list when they turn 18
To add, update or remove your information on the Register of Future Voters, you must provide one piece of identification showing both your:

- Memorandum of Notification of Death issued by the Chief of the National Defence Staff
- Statement of Vertification of Death from the Department of Veterans Affairs
- Notarial copy of Letters of Probate
- Official notification from the Public Trustee
- Registration of Death
- Document/receipt issued by a cemetery/crematorium in Ontario that proves burial or cremation
- Medical Certification of Death
- Life or group insurance claim along with a statement signed by a medical doctor
- Statement from a medical doctor, coroner or funeral director
- Program or notice from a funeral ceremony
If you are on the voters list, you should be receiving a voter information card (VIC) in the mail from Elections Ontario and can present your VIC and one piece of ID showing your name to receive a ballot when you go to vote.
If you are not on the voters list, you will not receive a VIC and must present one piece of ID showing both your name and current residential address to register and receive a ballot.
Only eligible voters can vote in provincial elections.
To vote:
- You must provide ID to receive a ballot. You may use an electronic copy of your ID, which may be printed or displayed on a mobile device.

Individuals who cannot or do not want to vote in-person may want to vote by mail.
To vote by mail you must submit an application and provide ID proving both your:
- name; AND
- current residential address in Ontario.
