Deductions
Why does Elections Ontario deduct tax, CPP and EI?
The total number of hours worked for Elections Ontario in a calendar year is used to determine if CPP and EI should be deducted. Once you have worked 35 hours for Elections Ontario in a year, CPP and EI start to be deducted, beginning with the first hour worked. Income tax is deducted based on bi‑weekly tax tables supplied by the Canada Revenue Agency.
I’m retired or receiving CPP disability pension. Why am I paying CPP?
Only people under the age of 18 or over the age of 70 are automatically exempt from paying CPP.
If you are between 65 and 70 and would like to be exempt from CPP deductions, you must file and send a CPT30 form to Elections Ontario.
You can get the CPT30 form from the Canada Revenue Agency.
Please note, deductions will stop being deducted the month following Elections Ontario’s receipt of the signed document.
Why am I paying Employment Insurance (EI)?
As per the Canada Revenue Agency, employers must deduct Employment Insurance from an employee's insurable earnings if that employee is in insurable employment during the year. There is no age limit for deducting EI premiums.
Legislative Forms
When will I receive my Record of Employment?
Record of Employment will only be issued if you have worked at least 35 hours and had Employment Insurance deducted from your pay. Elections Ontario submits Records of Employment electronically to Service Canada. You will be able to access your Record of Employment through Service Canada.
When will I receive my T4 from Elections Ontario?
T4s are only issued for income:
- Under $500 with deductions of Income Tax, CPP and/or EI.
- Over $500 dollars with or without deductions.
As per the guidelines set out by the Canada Revenue Agency, T4s will be mailed to you at the address provided no later than the last day of February of the following year.
What makes up the earnings amount on my T4?
The amount in the Employment Income – line 101 field of the T4 is based on your total gross pay (earnings before any income taxes, EI and CPP deductions). This is not your total net pay.
