At Elections Ontario, we believe that civic education is an essential component in building and maintaining a healthy and vibrant democracy.
For this reason, Elections Ontario worked with Student Vote during the recent 2011 general election to provide teachers and students with an opportunity to experience the electoral process during a provincial election year.
Student Vote is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that conducts election simulations that parallel federal, provincial and municipal elections. Since 2003, Student Vote has successfully conducted eleven parallel elections in schools across Canada including four federal, five provincial and two municipal elections.
On October 4 and October 5, 2011, Student Vote conducted an election simulation that paralleled the 2011 Ontario provincial election. Schools across Ontario were invited to participate—over 2,700 schools registered! Teachers and principals registered their schools. There was no cost to schools to participate.
Registered schools were provided with materials and supplies to run an election simulation that mirrored the real Ontario provincial election. Students were given the opportunity to cast a ballot for a candidate in their school’s electoral district.
The results of the Student Vote election simulation are now available. To see the Ontario results for all schools, please visit the Student Vote website.
