Covering the Election? Here’s what you need to know

TORONTO – Ontario’s Chief Electoral Officer would like to remind media about laws to keep in mind when covering the election on October 6.

Ontario law imposes a blackout on political advertising between October 5 and election day, October 6. New for this election is a blackout on the publication of election surveys that have not previously been made public. For more information on these laws, read our factsheet: Information for the media, publishers and broadcasters.

Media representatives are also reminded that filming or photography is not permitted inside a provincial voting location. The only exception to this prohibition is for media to capture candidates casting their ballot.  A photo opportunity needs to be arranged ahead of time between the candidate and the local returning officer. Elections Ontario Media Relations can provide you with still photography or footage of voting related activity upon request.

Media representatives may attend their local returning office at the close of polls. You are advised to make arrangements with the Returning Officer in advance.

Elections Ontario is the non-partisan agency responsible for administering provincial elections, by-elections and referenda.
