Notice of Registration cards arrive this week

TORONTO, September 18, 2007 — Ontario’s more than 8 million registered electors will receive their Notice of Registration cards this week, announced the province’s Chief Electoral Officer.

The cards are arriving by mail in a yellow Elections Ontario envelope that will also contain information on the referendum being held in conjunction with the provincial general election on October 10, 2007. Each card shows the address where the elector is registered, and gives the address, date and hours of operation of the advance polls and polling day voting location where he or she can vote.

“We have just completed an intense registration initiative in areas of new development and high mobility in the 107 electoral districts across Ontario. Revising agents have been knocking on doors in areas of high mobility such as apartment buildings and new housing developments,” said John Hollins, Chief Electoral Officer.

Hollins noted that electors should receive a Revised Notice of Registration card if their information on the Voters List was added or updated through this process. In rare cases, Elections Ontario may need to change poll assignments due to revised voter numbers in a particular area, and will send a Revised Notice of Registration card to electors affected.

Electors who do not receive a Notice of Registration card by September 23 should contact Elections Ontario at 1-888-668-8683, as this may mean their record is not up-to-date or they are not on the Voters List.

Electors who are not on the Voters List but who are otherwise eligible to vote – that is persons who are 18 years of age or older on October 10, 2007, Canadian citizens and residents of Ontario – may still vote. They must however provide proof of identity and proof of residence to get on the Voters List. Minor corrections to elector information, like a misspelled name or address, may be made when the elector goes to vote at an advance poll or on Election and Referendum Day, October 10, 2007.

“Whether they vote at an advance poll or on Election and Referendum Day, electors should bring their card with them, along with documents that prove their identity to ensure they are able to vote as efficiently as possible,” said Mr. Hollins.

Electors who wish to ensure they have been assigned to the right poll location or who need additional information on voting or accommodations for disabilities or other special needs, may contact Elections Ontario at 1-888-668-8683 or visit www.elections.on.ca.
