Burlington, Markham and York South-Weston electors may apply to vote by proxy

TORONTO, January 18, 2007 — Qualified electors for the February 8 by-elections in Burlington, Markham and York South-Weston who are unable to cast their ballot in person on Election Day or at an advance poll, may apply to vote by proxy. Proxy voting allows voters to appoint another elector in their electoral district to vote on their behalf.

Persons who ceased to live in Ontario within the two years prior to Election Day and whose last residence was in the electoral district of Burlington, Markham or York South-Weston may be entitled to vote under certain conditions. Contact the local returning office for more information.

An elector may not act as a proxy voter for more than two electors. To receive a Certificate to Vote on behalf of the elector appointing the proxy, the application must be provided to a member of the Returning Officer’s staff before 8:00 p.m. on February 7, 2007 – the day before Election Day. The Certificate to Vote must in turn be presented at the polling place to receive a ballot.

A proxy voter may apply to have his or her name transferred to the poll where the proxy vote is to be cast or, in turn, to transfer the name of the voter appointing the proxy to their own poll.

Applications to vote by proxy can be obtained from the returning offices or downloaded from the Elections Ontario website at www.electionsontario.on.ca.

To be eligible to vote, on polling day a person must be:

  • 18 years of age or older,
  • a Canadian citizen, and
  • a resident of the electoral district of Burlington, Markham or York South-Weston.

The addresses and telephone numbers of the returning offices may be obtained at www.electionsontario.on.ca or by calling Elections Ontario at (416) 326-6300 or 1 888 668-8683.
