TORONTO – May 6, 2004 – The May 13 provincial by-election in Hamilton East is less than one week away. Elections Ontario is reminding qualified voters who have not received a Notice of Registration card confirming they are on the Voters List to contact the Returning Office to ensure they are able to vote.
Names of qualified voters may be added to the Voters List up to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12 – the evening before polling day – by visiting the Returning Office.
Alternatively, they can have their name added to the Voters List on Election Day provided they:
- make a statutory declaration to establish their identity and qualifications,
- complete an application form to be added to the List, and
- confirm their identity and residence address by providing appropriate identification.
To have their name added to the Voters List on Election Day electors will require the following identification:
- EITHER one identification document that shows their name, address, and signature, such as driver's license,
- OR two identification documents:
- one that shows their name and signature, such as an old age security card, credit card, passport or citizenship card; and
- one that shows their name and their residence address, such as a tax bill or a utility bill.
There are other documents that may serve to satisfy poll officials. These could include a book of cheques printed with their residence address or a letter from a major corporation such as a bank or trust company.
The Notice of Registration card, mailed last week to all qualified electors, confirms that the person whose name appears on the card is registered to vote, and provides the location of the poll where the individual will vote.
To be eligible to vote, on polling day a person must be:
- 18 years of age or older,
- a Canadian citizen, and
- a resident of the electoral district of Hamilton East.
