TORONTO, April 15, 2004 — Ontario’s Assistant Chief Election Officer confirmed today that the writ of election has been issued for the Hamilton East by-election to be held on May 13, 2004.
“Today, the writ of election was forwarded to the Returning Officer for Hamilton East,” said Loren Wells. “Within the next 24 hours, the Returning Officer will open her office and be ready for business.”
All Canadian citizens who reside in Hamilton East and who will be 18 years of age or older on May 13 are qualified to vote. Ms. Wells emphasized that the advent of the Permanent Register of Electors means that full-scale enumeration is no longer necessary. Door-to-door Target Revision will happen April 19 to April 26, and will focus on electors in areas of high mobility, like apartments and new housing developments.
