TORONTO, October 2, 2003 – Ontario’s Chief Election Officer has announced the extension of polling hours at Brookmill Public School following a nearby incident that required voting to be halted for 45 minutes this afternoon.
The Chief Election Officer, John Hollins, has directed the returning officer for Scarborough Agincourt, Jean Pamenter, to extend polling hours to 8:45 this evening at the affected location. Polls for which hours were extended include #47, #48, #49, #50 and #52. No results from Scarborough Agincourt will be reported until the Brookmill polls close at 8:45 p.m.
Section 40 (4) of the Ontario Election Act provides for the Chief Election Officer to extend the closing time of a poll if polling is interrupted during polling hours. Polling hours normally run from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. EST.
