TORONTO, September 11, 2003 – Elections Ontario is urging qualified electors who are voting for the first time in Ontario in the October 2 provincial general election to ensure they have added their names to the Voters List.
New voters typically include new residents of the province, new Canadian citizens and voters who have turned 18 since the last election. These individuals should contact their local returning office to ensure their names are on the Voters List and they are able to vote.
Names of qualified electors may be added to the Voters List up to 8 P.M. on Wednesday, October 1, by visiting their local Returning Office. Electors may also add their names to the Voters List by bringing appropriate identification, showing their name, address and signature, to their poll on election day:
- One identification document that shows their name, address, and signature, such as a driver's license. OR
- Two identification documents: one that shows their name and signature, such as an old age security card, credit card, passport or citizenship card; one that shows their name and residence address, such as a tax bill or a utility bill.
NOTE: There are other documents that may serve to satisfy election officials. These could include a book of cheques printed with the residence address or a letter from a major corporation such as a bank or trust company. Individuals should contact their local Elections Ontario Returning Office for further confirmation of what is acceptable.
Returning office locations and phone numbers, and poll locations may be obtained from the Elections Ontario website at www.electionsontario.on.ca or by calling Elections Ontario at 1-888-668-8683.
To be eligible to vote, on polling day a person must be:
- 18 years of age or older,
- a Canadian citizen, and
- a resident of the electoral district.
