Elections Ontario and Elections Canada partner to update their voters lists

TORONTO, February 24, 2003 — Elections Ontario and Elections Canada will soon be gathering data to use in compiling their voters lists. Between March 1 and March 9, 2003, revising agents will visit residential areas in Ontario where there are frequent changes in tenancy, high-density dwellings such as apartment buildings and large numbers of new residents.

The revising agents will wear identification badges with Elections Ontario and Elections Canada logos.  They will be asking residents to provide and confirm information about eligible voters living at each address visited. If no one is home, a notice card will be left on the door with a telephone number to call to have voter information collected at another time.

A public information program in support of the registration exercise will be carried out during this period. It will include an information brochure delivered to all households in Ontario by Canada Post, as well as radio and newspaper advertisements.

“It is essential that our voter data be kept as up-to-date as possible on a continuing basis. We have a very mobile population today and the accuracy of the voters list is vital to our electoral system,” said John Hollins, Ontario’s Chief Election Officer.

Jean-Pierre Kingsley, Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, added, “This partnership will assist both electoral agencies in producing accurate voters lists whenever a federal or provincial election is called and in providing electors with prompt information on where and when to vote.”

The voters lists are maintained on an ongoing basis by using a variety of federal and provincial information sources.
