Candidate's Guide
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES IN A BY-ELECTION
Congratulations on your decision to stand as a candidate in this provincial by-election!
To help ensure a fair and transparent election process, Ontario’s Election Act and Election Finances Act set out the requirements in a by-election with respect to rules, deadlines, forms and other procedures and materials.
To introduce you to your obligations as a candidate and help you manage them, we offer various information resources, starting with this reference guide and your orientation meetings with your Returning Officer.
While the Chief Electoral Officer and Elections Ontario oversee the administration of the election, much of your local, day-to-day contact during the election will be with the Returning Officer.
The Election Finances division at Elections Ontario is available to answer your campaign finance questions from you or your Chief Financial Officer throughout the campaign period and until you complete your final step of filing your audited financial statement.
IMPORTANT: This short guide is intended as a quick overview of key requirements affecting candidates and is not intended as a comprehensive document. It is recommended that you review the Election Act and the Election Finances Act to make sure you are clear on your obligations as a candidate. Even if you have done this before, make sure you review the laws, including recent amendments to the election process.
